Barb Jurek is a vivacious 86-years-young volunteer who has been helping the ANGELS since April 2016. She regularly drives seniors to doctor appointments, grocery shopping and social events. As a key member of the Activities Committee, she has provided many hours of service supporting events through phone calls, bake sales, working in the Attic thrift store, driving and social visits. In the month of April alone she donated over 119 hours of service to the ANGELS organization.
Barb’s history of volunteering dates back to World War II. In 1941 she volunteered with the Red Cross folding bandages and assembling first aid kits. She also collected newspapers, magazines and metals for the war. She was a bell ringer for the Salvation Army and sold poppies to support the veterans.
Between 1955 and 1960 she was an active member of the Non Commissioned Officers (NCO) Club stationed in North and South Carolina where she worked on many special events that are held throughout the year.
From 1960 through 1963 she was in Hawaii and through the NCO Club there volunteered in stage performances for the VA hospital for the service men who couldn’t be with their families. She also worked with the “Marines for Tots” program to help service families that were stationed around the bases.
Currently, Barb is a new volunteer with the McGregor Lions Club and has also participated in the “Grandfriend” program that bridges the generational gap with 4th grade students in the McGregor School through writing letters and attending social events.
Barb enjoys knitting, crocheting, gardening, watching movies and playing Bingo (when she finds the time). She cannot remember a time when she wasn’t helping out where there was a need.
We are very blessed to have Barb as an ANGELS volunteer. She certainly is a hard one to keep up with!
